Are Briar Pipes Good?
Also, if you use the right oils and process them wisely, you'll end up with a nice tasting pipe with a very smooth draw, most likely a pipe that's less likely to absorb a lot of tar in the smoke. My experimentation with oil quenching has convinced me that a good oil quenched tube can be slightly better than a tube with no o/c straight out of the box, but there isn't much advantage to that - I don't think I can tell. /c vs not after 20 smokes and I certainly have exceptionally good pipes that are not soaked with briar oil. Echoing Marx's point, the key element in all of this is how well the briar is cooked and dried in the first place. Aside from seasoning the pipe, this process has another effect, all pipes that use this process have the same "nutty" flavor regardless of the origin of the briar.
